About me

My name is Alyssa - I'm a twenty-five year old lover of food, friends, and family. I live in Scarborough with my marvelous mate Matt, and our spazzy shorkie Sparky.

When I first moved out, I realized how much work cooking all of your own meals can be. Living at home, I had always taken for granted that I would eat well - as long as my dad was cooking. Not that my step-mama is a bad cook - she just calls cooking "is it okay if we have soup and sandwiches?" I soon grew to love spending time in the kitchen.

My mom has always tried to get me interested in all the food I still have a hard time not categorizing as "weird." From seitan (pronounced Satan, if you ask me), to "TVP" (textured vegetable protein), I've had a hard time accepting many of the meat substitutes that vegetarians consume. So, as much as I could see myself not eating meat, I can't see myself eating the necessary proteins from other sources. I am open to trying new things, and would love any suggestions.

I like to make most things from scratch. I have a pressure canner that I have yet to use (thanks Madre, and sorry I fail). I'm a little scared since it seems like a huge and daunting task. I do my best not to buy any pre-made sauces, mostly because of the sodium content. Now I find that I'm over-sensitive to some people's cooking because I don't use salt that much. When something tastes bland, my solution is to reach for the cayenne, not the salt shaker.

This blog is the best way I could think of to share my recipes and also get them down pat for myself. I'd love to hear feedback from readers!
